The SUNY New Paltz Distinguished Speaker Series hosts Amy Waldman, author of The Submission. A public book signing and reception will follow the event.

Rabbi Bill Strongin, spiritual leader of the Jewish Congregation of New Paltz, will lead the discussion. Feel free to bring a dairy or vegetarian dish to share.

Location: New Paltz United Methodist Church, 1 Grove Street

Pastor Bette Johnson Sohm will lead the discussion. Sponsored by the New Paltz United Methodist Women. Refreshments.

Location: Woodland Pond Community Room, 100 Woodland Pond Circle

Richard Barry, retired educator and administrator, published writer and writing consultant, will lead the discussion.

Location: Inquiring Minds Bookstore, 6 Church Street

Jan Schmidt, SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor, Department of English, will lead the discussion, focusing on the process of memorialization and remembrance.

 

Tuesday, November 13th

Community Book Discussion
Time: 10:30 a.m.
Location: Elting Memorial Library, 93 Main Street

Steve Lewis, published author and teacher at Empire State College and Sarah Lawrence College, will lead the book discussion.


Community Presentation/Discussion
Time: 7:00 p.m.
Location: Honors Center, SUNY New Paltz

SUNY New Paltz Psychology Professor Melanie Hill presents on the Psychology of Prejudice. Discussion will follow the presentation. Refreshments.

 

Wednesday, November 14th

Community Presentation/Discussion
Time: 7:00 p.m.
Location: Honors Center, SUNY New Paltz

Presentation about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder after the 9/11 attacks by Larry Winters, a Viet Nam War veteran, licensed mental health counselor and published author. Discussion will follow the presentation. Refreshments.

Academic Panel Discussion
Time: Noon
Location: Honors Center, SUNY New Paltz

Moderated by Gerald Benjamin, panelists include SUNY New Paltz Professors Clinton Bennett,  Philosophy; Ilgu Ozler, Political Science; Anne Roschelle, Sociology; and Hamilton Stapell, History. Refreshments.


Slide Lecture: Islamic Gardens
Time: 7:00 p.m.
Location: Honors Center, SUNY New Paltz

Professor Jaclynne Kerner, Art History Department, SUNY New Paltz, will give a slide lecture about Islamic Gardens and their meaning, followed by discussion. Refreshments.

 

Friday, November 16th

Journalism Panel

Moderated by Gerald Benjamin, panelists include: Elizabeth Benjamin, host of the daily political news show Capital Tonight; Jeremiah Horrigan, Middletown Times Herald-Record reporter; and Lisa Phillips, author, Professor of Journalism, Communication and Media at SUNY New Paltz. Refreshments.

Readings from The Submission by members of the Mohonk Mountain Stage Company followed by discussion.

Saturday, November 17th

Film and Discussion
Time: 5:00 p.m.
Location: Honors Center, SUNY New Paltz

Islamic Art: Mirror of the Invisible World, a 90-minute documentary “that provides a never-before-seen window into a culture of increasing importance to America and sheds light on the shared history . . . revealing over time much more continuity than division.” Refreshments.

 

Sunday, November 18th

Interactive Community Book/Program
Discussion with One Book Committee
Time: 1:00 p.m.
Location: Elting Memorial Library, 93 Main Street

Members of the community are invited to a discussion about The Submission and the 2012 program with One Book One New Paltz Committee Members. Refreshments.

 

Tuesday, November 20th

Community Book Discussion/Potluck
Time: 6:00 p.m.
Location: Reformed Church, Education Building, Fireside Room, Huguenot Street

Reverend Dianna Smith, Associate Pastor of the Reformed Church, will lead the book discussion. For information: 845-255-6340.
