Poetry Workshop/Reading

Times/Locations:  The Poetry Workshop will be held in Coykendall Science Bldg 110 at SUNY New Paltz, 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

*Those interested in this Poetry Workshop must pre-register by telephone at 257-2724 or 257-2755.

The Poetry Reading begins 7 pm. at Parker Theater on Campus.  Patricia Smith, author of Blood Dazzler, a collection    of poems about victims of Hurricane Katrina, will lead both events.

Location: Jewish Community Center, 30 North Chestnut Street, New Paltz, NY

Bagel brunch and discussion. Rabbi Bill Strongin will lead the discussion on Zeitoun.  Please feel free to bring a dairy or vegetarian dish to share.

Tom Meyer, Director Hudson Valley Writing Project SUNY New Paltz and Associate Professor Secondary Education, will lead the discussion.

Academic Panel Discussion

Time:  12:15 p.m. Brown Bag Lunch

Location:   Honors Center, College Hall SUNY New Paltz

Moderator:  Gerald Benjamin, CRREO Director and Professor of Political Science.  English Department Chair, Tom Olsen and Colleagues:   Phyllis Freeman, (Psychology); Peter Kaufman (Sociology) and Eve Tuck (Ed  Studies) will share their experiences as readers of  Zeitoun with the audience.

Time:  3:00 p.m.

Location: Mudd Puddle at Water Street Market, New Paltz, NY

Jan Schmidt, SUNY New Paltz Distinguished Teaching Professor, Department of English will lead the discussion.  Participants will discuss the book and Eggers’ use of creative nonfiction as a mode of witnessing.

Student Panel Discussion

Time:  5:00 p.m.

Location:  Honors Center, College Hall SUNY New Paltz

Moderator:  Ilgu Ozler, Political Science Professor and advisor to Amnesty International USA New Paltz Chapter.

AI Students will introduce AI’s campaign: “Counter Terror with Justice” and talk about its relevance to Zeitoun, followed by a discussion with the audience.

Community Book Discussion

Time: 3:00 p.m.

Location: Village TeaRoom Restaurant & Bake Shop (upstairs), 10 Plattekill Avenue, New Paltz, NY. Larry Winters, a Vietnam War veteran and licensed mental health counselor, working in Katonah, NY will lead the discussion. Larry is a widely published poet, men’s group leader and group psychotherapist. He has published the book: The Making and Un-making of a Marine.

Katrina Volunteers Panel

Time: 7:00 p.m.

Location: Town of New Paltz Community Center, 1 Veterans Drive, (behind Town Hall) New Paltz, NY

Panel consists of local volunteers who directly helped victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in and around the City of New Orleans.  Participants include:  Dr. Willie Kai Yee, a retired psychiatrist and long-time resident of the New Paltz community.

Kathena Hasbrouck DeGrassi, an Instructor in the Department of English at SUNY New Paltz, will lead the discussion.

Film Showing and Discussion (co-sponsored by Sociology Department)

Time:  5:00 p.m.

Location:  Lecture Center 100, SUNY New Paltz

SUNY New Paltz Professors will introduce a segment of Spike Lee’s film, When the Levees Broke and following the showing, participate in a discussion with the audience.

Panelists: Professors Anne Roschelle (Sociology), Brian Obach (Sociology), Ilgu Ozler (Political Science), Jonathan Rust (Psychology).  Moderators: Sociology Professors Karl Bryant & Roberto Velez-Velez.

Robert Polito, Director of the Graduate Program in Creative Writing at the New School in New York City, will lead the discussion.

Community One Book Displays

Caroline Paulson, coordinated an exhibit Flood Images—Here and There, at Elting Library, featuring memories of the Arab homeland by Amal Maseer, calligraphy by Barbara Bash and Caroline’s own multi-media, as well as kids’ art, photojournalism and more.
